Hi, I'm Jessica Roffe, and this is the story of my career beginning.
As an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, I majored in psychology after discovering a passion for "helping people" in high school. I immersed myself in internships, research labs, student organizations, volunteer work, and leadership opportunities, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I believed these experiences would help me discover exactly what I wanted to do after graduation.
Instead, by senior year, I felt overwhelmed and uncertain.
I was preparing to apply to graduate programs in psychology because I thought that was the expected path for psychology majors. But something didn’t feel right. None of my experiences had sparked the “a-ha” moment I was hoping for.
One day, while visiting my brother at a different university, I had a realization: being on a college campus energized me. As I reflected on my experiences, I recognized that the activities I enjoyed most involved supporting other students: speaking at Admitted Student Day, answering advising questions at the psychology department's front desk, and helping younger students navigate the sorority recruitment process, to name a few.
This was my "a-ha" moment. I realized that I could build a meaningful career helping confused students, just like myself, explore their values, interests, and passions and connect them to fulfilling career paths.
I shifted my focus to graduate study in higher education and went on to earn my master's in Higher and Postsecondary Education from Columbia University's Teachers College. I then landed my dream job supporting students at the University of Maryland in 2014.
Over the past twelve years, I have coached thousands of students as they explored majors, pursued internships and jobs, prepared for interviews, and launched their careers. I also taught a university course, Choosing Your Major & Career, for five semesters.
Through Career Beginnings LLC, I now help high school students, college students, and recent graduates around the country gain clarity, build confidence, and successfully navigate the transition from college to career.
I believe every student deserves personalized guidance to understand who they are, what they enjoy, and how to turn their education into internships, jobs, and meaningful career opportunities.
I look forward to helping you or your child begin their career!
